WHAT THIS IS

A 195-page hyperlinked research notebook built to the conventions that make a lab record defensible rather than merely tidy. 100 pre-numbered lab pages, 24 experiment protocols, literature tables, a reading log with citations captured properly, and a numbered idea index.

THE LAB PAGE

Page numbers are printed by the file, in sequence — a number you add later is a number you could have added later. Each page carries the date of the work, continued-from and continues-on fields in both directions, a reminder to rule through unused space before signing, and a signature block with a witness line.

THE WITNESS DETAIL

The witness line says: not a co-inventor, and understands the work. For a US patent record the corroborating witness is meant to be someone who is not an inventor and who can actually follow the experiment, and that is precisely the point people get wrong on a notebook they later need to rely on.

PROTOCOLS THAT ASK THE AWKWARD QUESTION

Every experiment page has a field for what result would count against the hypothesis, and it sits above the method. Writing that down in advance is the difference between a protocol and a diary, and it takes one line.

TWO LITERATURE TABLES, ON PURPOSE

A table with one row per paper is a reading log, and a reading log produces an annotated bibliography. The synthesis grid — themes down the side, sources across the top — is the one that produces a review, because a cell forces two papers into the same sentence. Both are included and each is labelled for what it actually does.

A NOTE ON SCOPE

This is stationery. Your institution's SOP governs your records, and it says so on the first page. What this does is stop a notebook failing on the mechanical points.
